The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards Restaurant or Bar in Another Space category includes projects located in educational facilities, cultural centres or museums, leisure centres and cruise liners – or any other space from across the UK. This year’s entries included restaurants or bars in a stadium, the O2 arena’s VIP lounge, a racecourse, holiday resort, a theatre and even a garden centre. Five entries made the judge’s shortlist.
Wildwood Kitchen in Wantage village is an alfresco-feel deli inside.
The challenge for Design Command was creating an alfresco feel to the space. The studio opened the space into a double unit and filled the ensuing void with a four metre vintage clock. Structural beams were required to support the extravagant chandeliers in the space, challenging the open shop frontage.
Located in The Scene, a new city centre hub, Nando’s features reclaimed timber floors and handmade tiles by Made a Mano in a repeated pattern, while an undulating feature ceiling also zigzags through the main dining space.
Firehouse located in Butlin’s Skegness presented a re-alignment of the brand to create a restaurant that was family-focussed with a wholesome food offering.
Part of the design included the development of brand wows, such as a giant cuckoo clock and careful consideration of space for buggies and wheelchairs. The egg booth seating frequently appears on social media sites, boosting brand awareness.
Coffee Ground is situated in a garden centre in Devon and is a new concept designed to be rolled out within the Wyevale estate and beyond.
Comprising of three iconic components – an oversized shed at the heart of the space providing a preparation area for free range goods, mobile plant racks of potted herbs, bringing the garden indoors and a hand-painted wall graphic which quietly celebrates each stage in the ground coffee process; micro-roasting and up cycled coffee grounds which are turned into compost.
The Platform Group created the VIP experience at the O2 area.
The American Express Invites Lounge takes guests through the back stage excitement and creates an experience through an oversized stage door, a green room, snug areas and private, bookable booths on an overhead gantry level.
