Restaurant & Bar Design Awards Shortlist 2015: Middle East & Africa Bar

Middle East and Africa Bar

The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards Shortlist 2015 for the Middle East and Africa Bar includes a wide range of projects from across the Middle East and Africa regions, including bars in Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, as well as the shortlisted entries. A total of four entries made the judges shortlist below, with two entries from Israel, a project from South Africa and one from Mauritius.

Tasting Room

A wine bar and an archive/library for local and imported wines, The Tasting Room in Israel is located in the cellar of a restored building. Studio OPA created a modern wine cellar with iron drawers, a handmade concrete bar and cracked oak, allowing the space and materials to age gracefully. Illuminated cork cases were hand cut with wine glasses placed inside each block.

Rum Shed

Rum Shed at Shanti Maurice, Mauritius designed by Deepak Seetamonee is inspired by the traditional local rum culture and captures the essence of a bygone era. With tavern-like windows and doors, and delightful old-school décor, the un-fussed design is lined with wood planks from old fishing boats, while tables and chairs made from bicycle rims and 50-gallon oil drums act as hanging light fixtures.

jajo

The new Jajo wine bar in Tel Aviv is a three-level 19th century restoration. Studio Dan Troim looked to create a classic but elegant, warm and romantic space in the 350 foot interior; inspired by Beit Jamal, a monastery near Jerusalem and 19th Century Parisian ballrooms.

Hells kitchen

The lack of glitz and polish at Hell’s Kitchen Melville is deliberate. Studio A aimed to create a ‘rock-n-roll’ only prohibition style bar that felt like an intrinsically cool, new concept for Johannesburg. In ode to New York American-Irish street gang The Dead Rabbits, the space features Moooi Rabbit lamp bases hanging over the bar as pendants. A concealed door panel hidden in the library leads into a secret whiskey lounge wrapped in a library wallpaper, which has become the bar’s best kept secret.

Each of the shortlisted entries is viewable on the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards site from the links below.
