In April 2015 6th Sense Interiors began the complete design and fit-out of a unique submarine-themed bar. Due to the vault shaped ceiling and the wagon shape of the space, the interior design team decided that dividing the space into two different areas would create the perfect atmosphere. The pub consists of one large and one small room, each with a bar. The smaller room was called the ‘Engine Room’ due to a large engine powered propeller.
The interior design is perfectly adapted to the requirements of a pub including the two serving bars that mimic the shape of a submarine and are made from decorative sheets of metal. The design includes several details that are commonly found inside any submarine: control panels, periscopes, visible pipes, bolted metal doors, radars, military maps, torpedoes and bulkhead lighting. The space also includes an anti-aircraft booth for the DJ and two mobile torpedoes moving on the ceiling.
The designers undertook extensive research for the project, producing a number of detailed concept sketches and documents, including gathering authentic maps, photographs and sketching different decorative wall options. 6th Sense then provided the client with these concept drawings for the final decorations, textures, materials and lighting fixtures.
Taking into account that the location is an underground space built from old stones, the design team had to mask the walls as much as possible, to get rid of the basement look and feel. Therefore, it was decided to cover most of the old stone walls in plasterboard, metal nets and to add the rest of the details such as sheet metal, mesh and large stud bolts; items which would belong in a submarine.
An imitation of a submarine command panel completes the large room with old monitors, watches, cameras and a mobile crane holding a torpedo up on the ceiling. The featured ambient lighting is the result of the metal arches, coated in Barrisol with shifting strips of colour RGB LED lights, lighting up from beneath the coating. The floor is covered in dark ceramic tiles which are in tone with the dark grey industrial shades of the whole chromatic design.
The execution of the metal structures, metal nets, pipes, the designing of the two bars and other main details visible in the photos were made by Elderom, in perfect concordance with the pub’s theme. The finished pub was ‘launched at sea’ in May 2015 and is designed with an industrial style and steampunk features.
