Star Burger (Kiev, Ukraine)

Sergey Makhno Architects were tasked by the operator to create a classy branded interior which combines the corporate identity of the Star Burger restaurant chain and a unique fearless design. The client is a Ukrainian restauranteur whose brief was to create somewhere to eat a delicious burger with an equally delicious design in the centre of Kiev’s growing new food+design quarter.

The entrance to the restaurant is through the Star Shop; an innovation for Star Burger restaurants. A year ago there was a bank located at 7/11 Khreshchatyk street which was heavily fabricated with false walls and years of excessive decoration. Stripping back glossy tiles, plasterboard walls and glitter, Sergey Makhno Architects exposed the real beauty of the original structure, leaving 99% of the original concrete and masonry.

The visual identity for the space was drawn from the corporate identity and black and green colours. Open and versatile, the restaurant is split onto two floors which are connected by a wood panel ‘portal’. This allows additional light up to the first floor, which overlooks the ground level, rather than fully overlapping the floor below.

A large bar along the window and extensive seating on the ground floor is designed for people to have a snack in a hurry or to socialise.

To balance openness with privacy, the second floor is more for relaxing with soft zones and lighting. Bespoke couches are made according to the architects’ drawings with the upstairs zone labelled ‘family one.’

The main material is wood. Tables and chairs complement the branded wooden paneling while beams on the double height ceiling complete the composition. Sergey Makhno Architects invented a light wall inspired by a chemical lab, which perfectly matches the overall loft-like look of the restaurant.

150 light fittings designed by Sergey Makhno illuminate the space and grab attention. Оne visitor metaphorically described the feature as a “light orchestra”: the various elements creating a harmonious composition.

Cylindrical clay chandeliers create a ‘Beehive’, the inspiration of which the name speaks for itself, with different sizes and shapes to define the different eating areas. Soft natural lines of luminaires highlight the authenticity of the interior and create a connection with the environment.

A valuable element of the luminaire collection is sconce ‘T3’. This metal lamp decorated with gold imitation is Sergey’s present for the Star Burger owners. It is a good luck symbol.

The venue is functional, yet is also a point of calm in the bustling city centre. The result being that Star Burger has a modern rebellious spirit, blending the classic American bar atmosphere with a unique design.
